PGAN UNDECIDED OVER NEXT AGM’S VENUE

февраля 18, 2012

WITH only weeks away from the 2012 Annual General Meeting (AGM) that would produce its next set of leaders, the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria (PGAN) is at crossroads regarding where to stage the event.

As a matter of fact, the leadership of the group is torn between hosting it at the PGAN Surulere office in Lagos or yielding to the demand of a sizeable number of its members, who want the exercise staged at any of the tournaments that have so far been confirmed.

For this class of persons, hosting the AGM at a tourney venue will ensure that a majority of them, who may find it financially burdensome to make it to and from Lagos, attend.

According to the PGAN Director of Finance, Liadi Jaiyeola, some members of the group are of the opinion that arriving at tourney venue a day before the event to execute the AGM would take away a lot of financial difficulties from members and also encourage participation.

There are indications that elections into the different offices are going to be keenly contested since a good number of serving officials are constitutionally not qualified to seek another term, consequently setting aside the issue of continuity, which is the sentiment some office holders always hold when seeking re-election.

PGAN’s outgoing director, 65-year-old Jamiu Oyebajo, is believed to have helped to steady the body’s flight, which was heading for a crash, since he came on board as head of a the caretaker committee before being elected to serve a first term and this final term.

Upon his election in 2010, the resident professional at Ikeja Golf Club said he would make the welfare of the Nigerian professional golfers his priority He also said: “I believe the PGAN can be steered further, especially towards expanding the tournament calendar of the body.

“We can get the players to constantly be at their best and also bring the best out of our members. I expect that eventually, the winnings for the players would be bettered and their overall welfare would be something of concern to PGAN.”

Already, two longstanding members of the association have already indicated interest in the director’s office. They are ex-officio member Festus Makelemi of Shell Golf Club in Ogunnu and resident professional of the Benin Club (golf section), Tony Uduimoh.

Another official that cannot be re-elected, having served two terms, is the present tournament director, Dominic Andrew, who may be replaced by Martins Odoh of Minna Cantonment Golf Club.

Jaiyeola and current operations director of the body, Femi Olagbenro, who changed portfolio at the last election, are still qualified to seek re-election into their current offices.
